LMF: Log Monitoring Framework

LMF is a flexible log monitoring framework that allows the user to match text from log files, using perl regular expressions and capturing parentheses (pattern). An optional external command (trigger) will be executed when a user-specified number of matches (threshold) is found within a user-specified period (within). In additon to the trigger, the rule can also have a message associated with it (message); when the rule is triggered, that message will be logged to the LMF log file. Each rule can also have a duration associated with it (duration); after a rule has been triggered and the duration has expired, an optional external command (release) will be run.

AMPS - AWESOME CODE.

AMPS is a modern publish and subscribe engine designed specifically for next generation computing environments. It is intended to allow the realization of scalable high-throughput, low-latency messaging required in real-time deployments such as in financial services. The architecture, design and implementation of AMPS allows the exploitation of parallelism inherent in emerging multi-socket, multi-core commodity systems and the low-latency, high-bandwidth of 10Gb Ethernet.
AMPS was designed to lower the latency in real-world messaging deployments by focusing on the entire lifetime of a message from the message’s origin to its consumption by end-user clients.
AMPS offers both topic and content based subscription semantics which makes it different than most other publish/subscribe messaging platforms. Some of the highlights of AMPS include:

Introduction to AMPS
  • Easy to use command interface
  • Full PERL compatible regular expression matching
  • Content filters with SQL92 WHERE clause semantics
  • Built-in latency statistics and client status monitoring
  • Delta publish and subscriptions
  • Basic CEP capabilities for real-time computation and analysis
  • Replication for High-Availability
  • Message replay functionality
  • Topic and content based publish and subscribe
  • Native FIX and XML message support
  • State-of-the-World queries
One of the biggest trading desk deployments saw a 70% CPU utilization reduction by switching from an oversubscribed multicast architecture to the selective subscription model of AMPS. For GUI folks, AMPS utilize   the SOW, sow_and_subscribe command, and Out-of-Focus (OOF) processing built into AMPS – those are fantastic features that ease responsive GUI development that no other messaging product has.

ASG Zena scheduling tool.

Have you ever worked on the project that needed to have a single console, where users can manage workloads and several scheduling points across multiple platforms and environments including Windows, UNiX, LINUX and AIX operating systems? I did. If you needed a tool to do it, Zena scheduling tool might be a tool for that. I have been working on the project where we had to develop our own home grown scheduling tool, and I have worked on the project that utilized Zena..

Zena allows to enable event-based scheduling based on the date and time, it is provides integration of some legacy applications, automates and integrates advance processes across different applications, manages multiple scheduling point from different platforms to a single console, supports multiple platforms and OS. Zena has highly scalable architecture and roles-based security. Zena also has graphical definitions of the processes and events.

We had 3 Zena environments/servers defined – Development, Test and Production. Zena agents were  installed on each server. Then within zena each agent needs to be defined in Zena environment and setup in a way so, that your promotion of the processes and tasks will be going smoothly from environment to environment (promotion flow).

Everything in Zena is visible. You can see everything in a diagram mode or development mode. Diagram mode is very visual and sometimes very helpful. You can define a process or procedure in such way that base on the condition met or unmet or depending on the outcome of the process,  another process and/or task or set of processes and/or tasks  will be scheduled.

It doesn’t take too much time to learn it, but you scheduled processes might be as complicated as you want.

WHY I AM USING GOOGLE DOCS.

I have long been a used of various office programs. I started with MS Office and, when I switched to Linux, I moved on to OpenOffice. They both are fine programs and do a great job at letting me create documents and spreadsheets. I always had elaborate spreadsheets calculating one thing or another, and they were immensely useful.

The problem, of course, was that I used several computers. Three at home, one laptop for going to work, and one work desktop. Keeping the files in sync was troublesome. I could never trust flash drives, because they go bad all the time.

I had my documents under control of CVS (code versioning system), and, when I edited a document, I would "commit" it to CVS, and I would "update" documents prior to editing. It always worked, but it was cumbersome.

The worst part of using the "one person edits a document" model, was that when someone else was editing or looking at the document, I had to hold off and we could not work on it simultaneously. Sharing by email gets tiring very fast.

So, when I saw Google Docs, with its ability to see a single document across many computers, and the ability to share with other users, it was a godsend. I share documents with my wife, my coworkers, and so one. We can collaborate on them and see in real time. Also, I do not need any thumb drives to be carried around or use CVS, there is only one copy of the document in the cloud.

The final plus of google docs is the real time stock quote function GoogleFinance. I use it to calculate the value of our stock holdings in almost real time. I have a big spreadsheet that calculates the current value of all my assets and liabilities, thanks  to the GoogleFinance function. Google docs has been a big time saver for me.
